Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964

Title VI and its regulations require that colleges and universities receiving federal financial assistance provide all students with a school environment free from discrimination, or harassment, based on race, color, or national origin. This right extends to discrimination or harassment based on shared ancestry or perceived shared ancestry or ethnic characteristics or citizenship or residency in a country with a dominant religion or distinct religious identity.  This means that students have a right to be free from ethnic or racial slurs, harassment for how they dress or speak, and from any stereotypes based on actual or perceived shared ancestral or ethnic characteristics.

CUNY stands firmly against antisemitism, Islamophobia, and discrimination of any form, including retaliation, on our campuses. To learn more about CUNY’s commitment to providing a safe and respectful educational environment free from discrimination based on race, color, and national origin, please see CUNY’s Understanding Title VI Resources page through the link below.
