Baruch College Children on Campus Policy Statement

Baruch College is committed to maintaining a safe, respectful, and effective learning environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. For this reason, students, faculty, and staff are generally not permitted to bring children to campus, including classrooms, instructional spaces, offices, and work areas.

The College recognizes that emergency or exigent circumstances may arise in which an individual has an unavoidable childcare need. In such cases, limited exceptions may be considered with appropriate permission, subject to the terms of this policy.

Children may not be brought to campus as a substitute for regular or ongoing childcare arrangements. Repeated or routine visits are not permitted.

Exclusions

This policy does not apply to children who are present on campus as part of a College‑ or University‑authorized activity, including:

• children attending College‑ or University‑sponsored events, camps, or programs intended for children or families;
• children participating in authorized community events;
• children lawfully using the library or visiting campus to obtain information regarding College services, where otherwise permitted under visitor procedures;
• children enrolled in elementary, middle, or high schools located on CUNY property;
• children registered in CUNY childcare centers; or
• children enrolled in College Now or other authorized educational programs, when present in authorized areas with appropriate supervision.

All such visits remain subject to applicable program rules, visitor procedures, and campus access, identification, supervision, and security requirements.

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to promote safety, minimize disruption to instruction and College operations, protect confidentiality, and reduce institutional risk, while allowing for limited flexibility in rare and unavoidable circumstances.

General Conditions

When a child is permitted on campus under this policy, the visit must be brief, occasional, and non‑recurring, and the child must remain under the direct supervision of the parent or responsible individual at all times.

Children may not be left unattended, and children who are visibly ill or exhibiting symptoms of a communicable illness may not be brought to campus.

Any permitted visit remains subject to applicable visitor, safety, and Public Safety requirements.

Approval Requirements

Students

Exceptions for students will be considered only in emergency or exigent circumstances and only with appropriate permission.

Where a classroom or instructional space is involved, any exception requires faculty permission, coordinated through the Dean of Students or designee, and may be withdrawn at any time.

For building access purposes, proof of approval must be available upon request and may consist of a brief written confirmation (e.g., email or message) from the Dean of Students or designee indicating that permission has been granted.

Faculty and Staff

Employees must obtain permission from their immediate supervisor or department chair (for faculty) before bringing a child to campus.

Enforcement

The College reserves the right to deny entry or require the departure of any individual and child from campus if the child’s presence is unsafe, disruptive, or inconsistent with College operations or this policy.

Violations of this policy may result in removal from campus and referral under applicable College rules and procedures.

Definitions

Child: A minor under the age of 18.

Direct supervision: Continuous, in‑person supervision by the responsible individual.
