In Memory of Dr. Mindy Engle-Friedman and Transition of the College Ombudsperson Role

    Dear Baruch Community,

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Dr. Mindy Engle-Friedman, who served the Baruch College community with extraordinary dedication, compassion, and integrity for nearly four decades.

In addition to her role as a professor of psychology, Dr. Engle-Friedman was a pillar of support and wisdom on our campus—most notably through her service as Baruch College’s Ombudsperson, a role she fulfilled with unwavering commitment until this past spring. In that capacity, Mindy became a trusted resource for students, faculty, and staff, offering a safe, impartial, and thoughtful space for resolving concerns and building understanding. She brought to the role not only deep empathy, but a profound belief in fairness, transparency, and human dignity.

Throughout her 38-year tenure at Baruch, Mindy left an indelible mark on our community. She championed student research; created spaces for scholarly engagement on critical issues such as climate change; and helped guide our community through difficult times—including the aftermath of 9/11, when she played a vital role in healing and resilience. Her leadership was recognized through numerous awards, including the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Teaching and Distinguished Service and the Weissman School’s Award for Service and Institutional Leadership.

While her passing is a tremendous loss, Mindy’s legacy lives on in the many lives she touched, the programs she built, and the values she exemplified. Her light continues to shine in the spirit of care and community that she helped cultivate at Baruch.

We are grateful that Professor Myung-Soo Lee has graciously agreed to assume the role of College Ombudsperson. Professor Lee brings deep experience, wisdom, and a long-standing commitment to Baruch’s values of equity, respect, and collegiality. We are confident that he will carry forward the spirit of compassionate service that Dr. Engle-Friedman so powerfully embodied.

Please join us in remembering Dr. Engle-Friedman with gratitude and admiration and in welcoming Professor Lee to this important role in service of the Baruch community.

    Sincerely,

    S. David Wu
    President, Baruch College
